The Problem with Gatekeepers
Humans aren’t the creators of creativity. Nor is creativity a rare gift limited to an elite class of artists.
But it sure can feel like it.
Universities, film studios, and publishers often position themselves as the gatekeepers over entire creative industries. Without their approval, you don’t get in. And that’s a problem. We have too many gatekeepers and too few stewards for what’s good, true, and noble in the arts. We need more gardeners to help nurture and grow artists—and less gatekeepers erecting gates to keep artists out that are creating with God but don’t have the right social media following or sales numbers.
A good way we can proactively avoid this cycle is to stop looking to human institutions and metrics for our creative validation. Industries don’t bestow creativity, nor does our imagination originate with us. God infuses each of us with unique talents and passions; then invites us to pursue them with him. That’s what it means to co-create with God.
As you do so, let God be your source for creative validation. When that happens, you’ll be amazed at the freedom that infuses your art—and your heart.
