Your Risk Footprint

How do you typically react when facing risk? Here are four ways most people respond. See which best describes your risk footprint.

1. Run from Risk. Those in this category will do almost anything to avoid risk. The prophet Jonah is the poster boy for this option. He was so determined to avoid the risks of going on a mission with God that he ultimately ended up inside an enormous fish for three days (see the first chapter of Jonah for details).

2. Hesitant to Risk. These folks prefer the status quo to the unknown. The story of the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-30) reflects this approach. The man is drawn to Jesus, but he simply can’t let go of his possessions.

3. Comfortable with Risk. These individuals accept risk without breaking a sweat. Like the one so enamored by a pearl of immense worth that he sold everything to acquire it (Matthew 13:45-46). He risked everything for one thing…with no upfront guarantee.

4. Run to Risk. The more the pressure rises, the more aggressive these risk-takers become. Consider David’s decision to fight the giant Goliath with only a slingshot, five smooth stones, and the God of the impossible (1 Samuel 17).

Is the category you most identify with one you are proud of…or embarrassed by? The good news is that how you’ve reacted to risk in the past isn’t the way you have to approach it going forward. With God’s help, we can learn how to risk well for what matters most.
