Why Be Vulnerable?

In a world that spiraling more out of control each day, it’s natural to want to risk little, especially when it comes to our hearts. It feels safer. But is it?

Not according to C. S. Lewis. In The Four Loves, he reveals why love requires us to be vulnerable. And how not doing so can actually be more risky. He puts it this way.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”

C. S. Lewis isn’t inviting us to give our hearts away foolishly. He’s just pointing out that love is risky and will require vulnerability.  But to never love is even riskier, for then our hearts become impenetrable. Either option involves risk. The key is choosing to risk well for what matters most. And to do so with God.

In closing, I’d like to take a risk and ask for your help in keeping these readings flowing and free for everyone. Will you consider making a financial donation today for this crowd-funded kingdom initiative HERE. For all who can, I’m grateful. It matters more than you imagine.
