What’s Your Ocean?

The act of making something beautiful—whether a loving home environment or a high school musical—is a sensory experience. As the creator, we must first see, hear, and taste what could be—long before it actually is. Then, once it’s a reality, others experience the creation through their senses.

But we often forget the importance of surrounding ourselves with the unique sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes that bring us life.

The ocean is my happy place. Since I live in the mountains, I have to find creative ways to experience it. I have a painting of a massive, vibrant blue-green wave in my study. The sight of it evokes awe and soothes my soul. I fall asleep to rhythmic ocean waves—not from my favorite beach but a simple sound machine. I saturate my world with the color blue, savor the smell of strong coffee, and awaken my taste buds with spicy salsa. I’m energized by the smell of rain, the sound of rolling thunder, and the sight of lightning illuminating the sky.

What’s your ocean? It’s not enough for your creativity to evoke the senses of others. How do you regularly surround yourself with sensory experiences that speak to your soul?
