Union with God Recreates Us
We’ve been looking at the Five Tenets of the Real. If you missed the first two tenets, you can read about them here: The Creator of Reality and Reality Rooted in God.
In the Old Testament, those who knew God best experienced ongoing relationship with him. There was intimacy, not simply obedience, information, or reverence.
Jesus was in perfect union with God. Listen to how he describes it: I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. (John 17:21 NLT)
This brings us to our third milestone.
Tenet 3: Union with God Recreates Us
This tenet is essential. Because, as John 15:5 makes clear, we can do nothing in our own strength. No matter how sincere we are, we can only overcome all that holds us back and all that is set against us through union with God. But it gets even better. God doesn’t limit who we will be based on who or where we are today. He offers to make us into a new creation:
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT)
Seeing God’s reality with new eyes frees us to see ourselves—and our creativity—in new ways. How does it accomplish this? Union with God recreates us.
