Three Ways to Defeat Chaos
How do we not let chaos in? These three practices are a good start.
Stop allowing chaos to surprise you. Remember, Jesus said that in this world we’ll have trouble. But because he has overcome it, we can take heart and have peace (John 16:33). So the first step is to be aware and have a game plan for what you’ll do when it hits. This alone moves you from playing defense to offense.
Reject the lie. Acknowledge that a situation or person is chaotic and trying to make you fearful, but remember that giving in to chaos and fear is your choice. Chaos cannot invade your domain—your heart and your head—without your permission. It wants you to believe you have no choice but to become chaotic when chaos hits. That’s a lie. Remember the truth: Jesus has already overcome the whole world.
Fill your heart with what’s good. This isn’t something to begin doing when chaos strikes. It’s something to pursue daily, not reactively but proactively. God offers to fill our hearts with things that bring us life, but again, we choose what goes in. If we choose to let chaos in, we become empty and void. If we fill ourselves with what God offers, we brim with life. If you find yourself responding to the storms of life in ways that aren’t helpful, perhaps it’s because you’re filling yourself with the wrong substance.
There’s more, but these practices will help you stay calm in this shaken world.
