The Illusion of Howling Wolves
Here’s a great reminder on Halloween, a day of darkness celebrated even by many believers.
The goal of chaos is not just to mess with your to-do list or disrupt your day. It is to destroy you.
In the wild, wolves seek to disorient their prey. They do this by waiting until nightfall. Then the beasts circle their target and begin their chilling howls. This creates the illusion of there being hundreds of wolves. In reality there may be six or seven, spread out strategically. The goal is to convince their prey that they are legion. The safest thing for the hunted animals to do would be to stay together. But they panic. They run. And they are devoured.
As are we when we allow chaos to have its way with us. It wants us to feel surrounded. Helpless. Hopeless. Because that’s when we panic and lose our bearings.
Ultimately, if we believe the illusion, we become an easy target. That’s why the right interpretation of what’s really going on is so crucial. Chaos wants us to feel surrounded and hopeless but we don’t have to give way to the wolves no matter how loud they howl. Reject fear, because God is our refuge, shield, and protector. And no evil will conquer us…on Halloween or any other day of the year.
If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. (Psalm 91:9-11 NLT)
