The Wise Men’s North Star

January 6 is Epiphany, a Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles as represented by the magi, or “Wise Men. ”

It’s fascinating how the magi followed a star in their search for the birth of the prophesied King. In a literal sense, the star was guiding them to a stable in the middle of nowhere. But in a mythic sense, this “North Star” was guiding them back to “Eden”– not geographically, but to the One who would be the new Adam and make all things new.

After they saw Jesus, they didn’t go back to Herod with a report. Or go back to Story 2. They saw the miraculous, worshipped the baby Jesus, and followed him into Story 1.

We can too. From the moment of Adam and Eve’s tragic choice in Eden, Jesus has been our only source for regaining Story 1. Jesus is our North Star. He’s how we experience Eden again.

The word “epiphany” has come to mean an illuminating realization or discovery, resulting in a personal feeling of awe and wonder. May this day of Epiphany illuminate your heart and mind with a fresh sense of wonder.
