The Vine & the Void

It is good to explore whether we are attached to the Vine or the void.

Jesus says:

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:4–7 NIV)

If we remain connected to the Vine, we will accomplish great things (bear much fruit). But if we do not, we can do nothing. Not do pretty well. Not pull it together in our own strength. Nothing.

Not only that, if we don’t stay tethered to the Vine, we are like branches tossed into the fire and burned. In other words, by our choice we end up in chaos. Clearly, we want to stay connected to the Vine.

The void does everything to pull us from the Vine. To create doubt. Bring disappointment. Numb our hearts. Diminish our good desires. And steal the passion for our creativity. All of it, swallowed up by a big gaping hole of nothingness.

The Spirit opposes that. You’ll recall in Genesis 1:2 how God’s spirit hovered over the void and began trans- forming this vast emptiness into beauty, life, and order.

We have a choice when the void that is chaos tries to deplete our dreams and pull us into emptiness. We can get sucked into the void or we can stay connected to the Vine, allowing the Creator’s creativity to flow through us.

The stakes are high. The choice is ours.
