More Than a Muffin Mix

The void is empty of ideas. That’s why when we’re there, we tend to rely on formula to see us through. There are no higher thoughts from God. So we look to what we’ve done before, hoping it will somehow work again.

The void lures us to formula. Detached from the Vine, we feel like it’s the only way to get things done. Creation is about bringing something new into existence. Formula is about re-creating what has been through a repetitive series of steps. It seeks to gain similar results by duplicating what’s worked in the past. That’s great for a muffin mix. Not for your art.

But God didn’t overcome chaos with formula. He overcame it with his creativity and his presence, neither of which is predictable or repetitive. God makes all things new—not all things the same.

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:5 NIV)

We have the same opportunities to transform the void and emptiness in other people’s lives and in the world’s raging turmoil.

The void is hollow at its core. The Vine provides life at his core.

Jesus is our Vine. He is also the Word through which everything was made (see John 1). Look at what God says about Jesus being the Word:

So shall My word that goes from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11 NKJV)

The Word (Jesus) goes into the void but never returns void. The Word changes the void. The Word accomplishes what God pleases. It completes its mission every time with 100 percent success.

Jesus is our Vine. When we stay attached to him, we can do the impossible. Because no longer are we limited by our limitations. We are connected to the One who knows no limits.
