The Hour Is Late

If you’ve ever had young kids or were one (see what I did there?), you’ll relate to this scenario. It’s 6:30 a.m. and your child needs to get up for school. Their alarm blares, then goes off. This is followed by prolonged silence. After a few minutes, you stick your head in their room.

“Hey, time to wake up!” you say in your most chipper voice.

“I’m awake,” they mumble groggily as they pull the covers over their heads. And there’s the problem. They say they’re awake. They know it’s time to get up. But until they stand up and start the day, nothing happens.

It’s the same for us—except the spiritual stakes we find ourselves in are far greater. The hour is late. We say we’re awake. That we know what’s important.  Yet as Morpheus observes in The Matrix, “There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.”

Many believers are in a deep slumber, pulling the covers over their heads rather than standing up and engaging. We must wake up. And then walk the path.

Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light. (Ephesians 5:14 NLT)

One last thought. If today’s reading resonated, take a moment now to email or share it with a fellow creative, friend or family member who could use the encouragement.
