Stop Rationalizing the Slide
We need to stop rationalizing our slide into the artificial. This can happen in big and small ways.
When it comes to ChatGPT, I choose not to “chat” with a bot and find other ways to make my decisions. It’s really not a sacrifice. It’s how I lived before it was offered, and I did just fine. When I feel the pull for relief, I do my best to pursue true restoration rather than seek fast ways to temporarily numb the pain.
But there remains an allure to the artificial. As Greek historian and philosopher Xenophanes noted centuries ago, “Men always make gods in their own image.” We especially see this in AI. By design, it is quick, easy, and always at our disposal. It learns from us how to satisfy us. Tell it what you want and it obliges. Your personal assistant to the good life. Or so it seems.
Others shrug and say it’s just a tool. What’s the downside? Adam and Eve likely felt the same way. They looked to something other than God for life. It’s just a tree. We can use it for good or for evil. It’s a shortcut to attaining godhood. We’ll deal with any problems and use our newfound powers for good.
That’s always how the descent begins. And it’s why we find ourselves on this downward slide today.
