Rethink the Tree of Knowledge?

In his book Scary Smart, former Chief Business Officer of Google Mo Gawdat encourages us to continue engaging and investing in AI so we can reprogram it for good things. He warns that it’s up to us if we don’t want to go to war with the machines. There’s that word again... Machines.

I don’t buy that premise. Trying to reprogram AI with human ingenuity and ego sounds like a doomed mission from day one. It’s humans who created the problem to begin with. Rather than admit that tapping into the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was a massive mistake, we’re told the real issue is we simply need to re-engineer it to serve us better. So we remain focused on the wrong tree for the wrong reasons.

In truth, I’m okay going to war with the Machine if the goal is to remake the world in its image.

If those are the stakes, I’m not looking for a compromise.
