Seeing What Comes Next

During a recent flight, the lady sitting next to me had a unique tattoo of / / on the side of one finger.

I asked what the two diagonal lines meant, and she answered with a story. She mentors a talented musician whose desire is to create scores with God for movies and shows. The young composer set out to find a visual symbol that would be in front of her every time she played the piano. Ultimately, she chose a tattoo of two diagonal lines for a finger on her dominant hand. My seatmate decided to get the same tattoo as a reminder to pray for this woman’s heart, as well as her art, each day.

She smiled. “But you didn’t ask me that. You asked what the lines mean. They represent a musical notation called caesura. When the symbol is placed in sheet music, it indicates a brief silent pause for the orchestra, during which time is not counted. Playing only resumes when the conductor indicates. So everyone must keep their eyes on the conductor—to watch for his timing and interpretation of the music.”

To / / with God, we must take our eyes off our own plans so we can look fully at him for the right interpretation and timing of what comes next…in our lives and our creativity.

One last thought. If today’s reading resonated, take a moment now to email or share it with a fellow creative, friend or family member who could use the encouragement.
