Rising Waters

In the storms of life, it can feel like we’re going under. As the water rises, so does our certainty that we’re going to drown.

And yet God’s never met a storm he can’t overcome. As his sons and daughters, he teaches us how to do the same. And he does so in ways that are never quite the same as the time before.

As you look at the churning waters around you, consider God's endless ways to deal with these liquid challenges.

Sometimes he invites us to walk on water (Matthew 14:28– 29). Other times, God turns the water into wine (John 2:7–9). Perhaps he wants to part it and take us between two massive walls of water (Exodus 14:21–22). Other times, he shows us how to calm the waves (Mark 4:39).

There simply is no formula. That’s why we can’t approach every situation the same way. We must ask and stay expectant for what he will do.

While we’re on the topic, have you noticed that God rarely calls us into waters we can overcome in our own strength? He’s most active in the deep, where the waters are over our head. Yet even then, the water is only overwhelming when we think it is up to us to navigate it. Ask Peter. Walking on water is only possible when we keep our eyes on Jesus rather than the waves.

It’s time for us to graduate from the baby pool and be wave riders in uncharted waters, the kind that can only be navigated with God.
