Personality Test Limits

Your primary identity is a son or daughter of God. Though the world and others (and often we) try to define us in helpful and hurtful ways, never trade your foundational identity as a son or daughter of God for those temporal or false labels.

Why is that core identity so essential? Because it comes from the Creator. It is how he sees you. The world didn’t give you that identity so it can never take it from you.

From there, further definitions can become unhelpful. The more descriptors we add, the less we become. We take on the label of the make-it-happen person. Or the person who is great behind the scenes. We name ourselves as passive. Or aggressive.

But are these labels true or just your current means of dealing with life?

Good mechanics don’t define a car by its current state. They test what’s broken to restore it. Likewise, personality tests don’t define us but reveal our current state and how we try to make life work.

Ask God who he made you to be. Your true identity is God given, not test-driven. Rather than letting personality tests limit our potential, let’s recognize the limits of these tests as well as the effects of chaos, which try to make us forget who we are or to act as we’re not.

I can hear the doubt slipping away. But some of you feel stuck. “If you only knew me . . .”

I don’t. But God does. He created you and knows everything about you.

Let him keep shaping you into the you he had in mind from before time began. This is the way to freedom.
