Jesus as Creator

The Genesis creation story is the first account of creation in Scripture. But it isn’t the only one.

Incredibly, the creation story is retold from a completely different perspective in the New Testament. It’s a fascinating experience to read the first verses of the books of Genesis and John back-to-back. Though both start with the words, “In the beginning,” John’s account veers into new territory with some “behind the scenes” details about creation.

John 1 (1–5; 9-10) expresses it this way:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. (NIV)

In John’s version, we see the essential role Jesus played in creation. Through him all things were made. Nothing was made without him. His life is described as the light of all humanity. Other translations say the darkness did not comprehend this light (NKJV) or can never extinguish it (TLB). The Message says it even more strikingly: “The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.”

If you want your creativity to blaze with life-light, remember the essential role Jesus played in Creation…and desires to play in your creations.
