Collaboration, Not Isolation

In Genesis 1 we see the Creator in his glory.

So much happens in these first six movements of creation. On the first day, God begins by speaking.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3 NIV)

The first thing to note is that God didn’t create alone.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. (John 1:1–2 NIV)

The Word who was with God is Jesus. Jesus was with God from the beginning. Creation was accomplished by creative fellowship—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The trinity. Together.

Creation wasn’t a solo project. It was a generous cooperative fellowship of wild creativity.

God speaking galaxies into existence. The Spirit hovering over the chaos (Genesis 1:2). Jesus as the conduit through which everything was made (see yesterday’s reading, Jesus as Creator).

I wonder what role the angelic beings were given. I find it hard to imagine God, as he headed out to begin the greatest creation project of all time, telling the angels: “Hey, just stay put. I’ll tell you what happened once I get back!”

God wasn’t on a solo creative mission then—nor is he now. We, as his sons and daughters, are invited to co-create with him in this moment.

The best creativity, according to the Creator, is always done in collaboration—not isolation.
