Is Self-Doubt Good?

The world indoctrinates us from childhood to believe we can be and do whatever we want. We’re at the center of our story and self-doubt is bad—because it stands in the way of self realization.

But is that true? The opposite of self-doubt is self-assurance and self-confidence. And placing our assurance and confidence in ourselves is never wise.

But we tend to get it backward. We’re overconfident in our view of how the world works and our ability to make things happen. Then, when everything falls apart, we don’t question our premise. We question God’s goodness.

So yeah, I believe self-doubt is good. It reminds us to renounce the allure of the self-life. And redirects our confidence to God alone. In our own strength, we can do nothing. But with God, all things are possible.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 NLT)
