In Over Your Head

God wants to show us how to overcome chaos. And he does so in ways that are never quite the same as the time before.

Consider the many ways God uses the same substance—water—in endlessly creative ways. Is God inviting us to walk on it today (Matthew 14:28– 29)? Or turn the water into wine (John 2:7–9)? Perhaps he wants to part a sea so we can escape between two walls of water (Exodus 14:21–22)? Other times, he shows us how to calm waves (Mark 4:39). There is no formula. We can’t approach every situation the same way. We must ask.

But God rarely calls us into waters we can overcome in our own strength. He is most active in the deep, where the waters are over our head. Yet even then, the water is only overwhelming when we think it is up to us to navigate it.

He constantly shows us new ways to overcome what comes against us. But he never wants us to accept the chaos as our new normal.

We weren’t created for chaos. We were created to overcome it.
