How Close Is God?

People often talk about God as if he’s way up there, somewhere in the clouds, and we’re way down here, left to our own means. Or that if we want to find God, we need to search for him or wait until church on Sunday morning.

But God is not a distant Father. He doesn’t show up more in cathedrals or on Sunday mornings. He’s always present. And closer than our skin.

Here’s a simple way to reframe the distance between you and God.

Take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line right through the middle of it. In the top half, write the word “God.” In the bottom half, write your first name. Look at the line that separates you and God. That’s the primary way most see their relationship with him.

Now take the top half of the sheet and fold it down until it’s even with the bottom edge. Notice how there’s no separation between you and God. Your names are touching. You are together.

This simple exercise reflects the most beautiful reality of all—our union with God.

On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. (John 14:20 NIV)
