Classic Books Are Being Changed

It’s important to own physical copies of the books that matter most to you. This is especially true for your personal Bible. Here are three reasons why.

First, there’s the unpredictability of digital content. Even after you buy it, you’re dependent on several factors all working together that are largely out of your control—from new publisher edits and the streaming service to the wireless provider and the electrical grid.

Second, we’re in a moment in time where traditional Christian thoughts and concepts are being categorized as hate speech. If that trend accelerates, retailers and content providers could use that designation to ban such content. You might not think that’s likely. But how many other things did we once view as unlikely that are now the new norm?

Third, there’s a growing trend among publishers to re-write portions of classic books to better (in their opinion) align with the mood of this moment. It’s already happened in books by Mark Twain and Agatha Christie as well as with children’s authors such as Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Richard Scarry. Who will be next is anyone’s guess. But the copies from that author on your bookshelf are revision-proof.

It’s important to note that most Christian publishers are now owned by larger secular companies—which means the vast majority of Bible translations are owned and published at the discretion of these secular companies.

For content that matters most, invest in your personal library. And choose the real over the digital.
