Good Luck With That
We regularly wish people good luck on an upcoming test or project. The question is…why?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying we should wish anyone bad luck…or hope a person’s luck runs out. I’m saying the concept of “luck” doesn’t align with a Story 1 view of life or God.
Let’s look at how Merriam-Webster defines luck: to come upon something desirable by chance. In other words, it accounts for the good or bad that happens to us through the lens of randomness and chance.
But God isn’t a god of chance. Nor is he random. He’s a purposeful, intimate Creator who runs the universe and fathers us with great intention. In his creation, there’s no magical pixie dust called “luck” that we can wish on others or obtain through some talisman that operates independently from God.
In a Story 1 life, there’s no place for the concept of luck. May we never again confuse God’s blessing and favor with good luck—nor the consequences of this fallen world and our brokenness with bad luck.
If you’re still determined to believe in luck, all I can say is…good luck with that. ; )
