Why Good Is Never Good Enough
We love epic tales of good versus evil, whether we’re reading, watching, or writing them.
It’s essential to remember, however, that “good” alone isn’t enough to ultimately save the day, the world, or us.
Yet we tend to allow our stories to set the definition of “good.” The evil in the story is bad. So in contrast, the one fighting the bad is good…or at least a little better. Often, the protagonist and the antagonist are just different shades of gray.
But it’s not relative or generic “good” that ultimately wins the battle against evil. Only God can do that.
As C.S. Lewis states, “There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and bad when it turns from Him.” (The Great Divorce)
Good will never be enough. The Tree of Knowledge had both good and evil. But it wasn’t the Tree of Life.
As odd as it sounds, the world doesn’t need more good art. What the world needs is more “God-art”—creativity saturated in the awe, wonder, and power of the perfect One. And that’s what we are invited to create…with God!
