Who Have You Let Name You?

There are at least four significant forces that can diminish your God-given identity. It’s good to know them so you can then guard against these toxic lies:

  1. The world tries to define you. At any gathering, the most common question is, “What do you do?” Over time, we learn to do more of what gets noticed or rewarded and avoid what we don’t do well. Your business title hinges on what you do. Your income may as well. Many relationships, including marriage, are, unfortunately, based on performance.

  2. The enemy tries to destroy us (John 10:10). As discussed earlier, he chose the wrong story and does everything in his power to cause us to do the same.

  3. Our fears limit us. We legitimize and rationalize our phobias and worries rather than believe that it’s possible to live without them. They aren’t just a bad habit, they keep us from living in freedom.

  4. Isolation neuters us. That’s why those in the Orphan Realm often forget who they are. You simply cannot fully enter into identity if you do life alone.

All of these can erode our identity, yet none of them have the authority to name us.

Only the Creator can name his creation. And God has named us. He is our Father and we are his sons and daughters (2 Corinthians 6:18). And unlike a name or title the world gives, this identity can never be lost, stolen, or downgraded.

As his son or daughter, you have total access to an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving, really good dad.
