What’s Next, Papa?

The first way God introduces himself is as Creator. But I believe one of the favorite ways God loves to be known is as Father.

During Creation, God breathed life into Adam and soon after created Eve. Throughout Scripture, we see God as a good, adoring, attentive, boundlessly creative Father.

He creates. Then he fathers.

Knowing God as both Creator and Father is essential. If he were a distant, remote, checked-out Creator, we might still be in awe. But it would be impossible to experience intimacy with him. The reason we can is because he also chooses to love us as a father loves his sons and daughters. Every part of our identity, including our creativity, flows from that love.

When we enter into our days together with God, we can know indescribable joy and peace. We wake each day with expectancy for what our Father has for us rather than striving to make our expectations happen.

This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. (Romans 8:15–16 MSG)

Though chaos tries to make us forget or doubt who we are, when we know God as Father, we know our true identity—sons and daughters who co-create with our dad.

May you awake each day in wonder, greeting God with an expectant “What’s next, Papa?”
