What We Can’t See

In this increasingly virtual, artificial world, we need a way to see clearly what’s really going on.

Thankfully we’re given a handle for doing so in the book of Hebrews. In it, the writer cuts through the fog by reminding us of the “fundamental fact of existence”— that God is the foundation of everything.

The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. By faith, we see the world called into existence by God’s word, what we see created by what we don’t see. (Hebrews 11:1–3 MSG)

There’s the handle. To see what’s really going on, we must look through eyes of faith. To set our eyes on God and how he defines his creation rather than what the world calls good.

In this world of competing realities, we will be offered the most enticing substitutes designed to pull us away from God. Virtual reality. Artificial everything. But the further we get from God, the shakier our reality becomes.

As this world grows more unreal, it’s essential we remember this fundamental fact of existence: our firm foundation from which we see everything else must be in God and God alone.
