What Comes First?

We want the desires of our hearts. But can't start there or our desires become idols.

The first step is to delight in God. To be like the character in Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables, of whom it was said: "He did not study God; he was dazzled by him."

The order matters.

We must first turn our focus to God and desire his presence more than any other desire. No matter how good the thing is that we want, we must want God more. He has to come first.

Then he will give us the desires of our hearts.

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4 NIV)
