Uncomplicate Your Creativity

When we feel stuck or find ourselves wrestling with a decision when deep down we already know the answer, it’s a sign we’re making it harder than it has to be.

We do that a lot. As humans, we complicate things. And along the way, we tend to think God does the same.

Yet God isn’t a God of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). Notice how Jesus used parables rather than complex algorithms to explain the Kingdom of God. He showed how all the teachings of the Law and the Prophets came down to just two things. Love God. Love Others. (Matthew 22:37-40)

Paul says this about keeping it simple: But I am frightened, fearing that in some way you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to our Lord, just as Eve was deceived by Satan in the Garden of Eden. (2 Corinthians 11:3 TLB)

Pure and simple. That’s how God invites us to approach all of life…including our creativity.

When you think about your current project, if it feels too complex, ask God to simplify it. If you find yourself having to explain your creativity to those it was designed for, perhaps there’s a way to express your ideas in a clearer way. Nuance is great. But being overly vague or complicated doesn’t make art smarter or better.

Keep creating with God. But also, remember to keep it simple.
