Tradition Isn’t Repetition

Traditions reveal what a society or culture values. But to matter, it has to be more than simply remembering or honoring the past through a momentary toast or reading or gathering.  

What made the moment special the first time was the freshness of the original act. While remembering it is good, the truest way to honor acts of bravery or sacrifice or love is to remain brave, sacrificial, and loving.

In other words, we keep tradition alive best by not just honoring it but rather living it.

As Mark Twain says: "Tradition is not wearing your grandfather's hat...it's buying a new one like he did."
