The Next Step Matters Most

The next step always matters most. Especially when so many of the possible paths are meant to take us further away from God.

This is what the LORD says: “Stand where the roads cross and look. Ask where the old way is, where the good way is, and walk on it.” (Jeremiah 6:16 NCV)

What tends to get in the way? To be blunt, we do. But when we place God first, everything else falls into place, under him. Because then our pressure to perform is off. The choices we make aren’t based on our experience or another’s expectations. If we wait until we feel ready, we’ll get off track because the focus then becomes too much about us and too little about God.

Perhaps that’s why he regularly calls us into situations that are beyond us...but never beyond him. The goal isn’t to prove ourselves to God but to proceed with God. He’s not looking for the person who believes they can make it happen through their own grit or wit. He’s looking for those who will follow his lead, desire his presence, risk well, and trust the outcome to him.

What a relief. Because what God has for us depends far more on him than on us. Which means that no matter what we face, we can rest in the fact that we’re completely unqualified and yet fully ready to take the next step.
