The Immense Power of Ideas

Our culture is fascinated by new ideas, especially when it comes to interpreting our lives. Rarely do we see the danger in embracing the next bright, shiny offering for how we see ourselves, God, or the story we find ourselves in.

This cavalier approach has not served us well. So many risk everything for an untested idea…only to later wonder why things went south. We must anchor our concept of risk to our relationship with God…especially in a culture that is trying to redefine reality on a daily basis. Without this, we run the danger of embracing an intriguing idea more than we embrace God.

And we forget the immense power—for good or evil—that ideas hold.

In his book Renovation of the Heart, Dallas Willard offers this provocative insight:

“Ideas and images are the primary focus of Satan’s efforts to defeat God’s purposes with and for humankind....Thus, when he undertook to draw Eve away from God, he did not hit her with a stick but with an idea. It was with the idea that God could not be trusted and that she must act on her own to secure her own well-being.”

Where did we ever get the idea that all ideas were equal…or safe? What idea has the enemy hit you with in order to draw you away from God?

In closing, I’d like to take a risk and ask for your help in keeping these readings flowing and free for everyone. Will you consider making a financial donation today for this crowd-funded kingdom initiative HERE. For all who can, I’m grateful. It matters more than you imagine.
