The Illusion of Control

When we feel the world closing in around us, it’s easy to go into survival mode. We tighten our grip in an effort to not lose more.

But what if we allow the unexpected and unwanted interruptions to remind us that we never were in control in the first place?

What if the disruptions we try so hard to avoid are actually opportunities in disguise?

After all, the best part of a movie occurs when the hero’s back is against the wall and all hope seems lost. Whether it’s Indiana Jones surrounded by enemies on a rickety rope bridge or Doc Brown clinging to the clock tower in a lightning storm, our hearts beat faster as the emotions—and stakes—intensify.

But our lives aren’t a movie. In the real world, interruptions seem less dramatic. The future of the world isn’t in your hands. But a relationship is at stake. Setbacks are costly. And there are no guarantees. So when the unexpected happens, it seems safer to stabilize than step into the unknown.

But what if these disruptions are the gateway to a better life? Rather than trying to get things under control, what if you were to release the illusion of control? That feels risky. But doesn’t it also feel enticing to consider letting go of what you were never meant to carry?
