Self-Destructing Journal

I love capturing ideas whenever and wherever they occur—and the best container for doing so is what I call the “self-destructing” journal.

This counterintuitive practice has been immensely helpful for my creativity. It can be for you as well.

Begin by buying an inexpensive physical journal. Its only purpose is to capture ideas—not your grocery list or your workout reminder. You may be tempted to take notes on your phone. That’s a terrible idea. You don’t need another reason to be tethered to your distraction device.

Take the journal everywhere you go other than the shower (unless you have waterproof pages!). Bring it to restaurants, church services, team meetings, movies, and sports events. Place it on your nightstand before going to bed. Doing so is a sign you expect to hear from God anytime, anywhere. It’s impossible to create with God if you don’t believe he has anything to say to you.

When someone or something sparks an idea , jot it down. Transfer it later to a more permanent file or document. Then—rip that page out of your journal and throw it away. The goal is to use the journal until every page has been ripped out. That’s when the current journal self-destructs.

Don’t be sad about its destruction. It was a noble sacrifice. Just get a new journal and keep writing.
