Sea Change

The word sea change isn’t just a nautical term. It refers to any profound transformation. Like the one our world is going through now.

Though what’s happening all around is heating up, it isn’t new. The unraveling began the moment Adam and Eve chose life apart from God. Paul, in the book of Romans, describes how this choice plays out…both in his time and now.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools  and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. (Romans 1:21-25 NIV)

While it’s not new, we are in a moment of obvious acceleration. During this massive sea change, we don’t need endless conversations about the tumultuous waves. Nor is the solution to buy a bigger boat. All of that is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Jesus is our only hope. And this sea change doesn’t surprise him. He warned us so we wouldn’t be surprised either. “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NLT) How do we have hope during these times? We trust our Captain—who has not just overcome the sea, but the entire world.

Keep your eyes on Jesus. Not the turbulence. And take heart, because you’re on the right side. No matter how rough the waters get.
