Made For Another World

I’m finding less and less in this world that satisfies me. I hope the same is true for you.

The reason is simple. What fascinates the world no longer fascinates me. The hunger I have is one this world isn’t capable of filling.

I used to enjoy spending hours in bookstores, buying more books than my nightstand could possibly hold. But recent trips have left me empty-handed and heavy-hearted. The general market books only offer recycled Ecclesiastes insights. Self-help that’s really no help at all. At the same time, most new books by Christian publishers are candy-coated feel-good messages from people who have large followings but little to say about such a time as this.

I’m naming this because when nothing in this world seems to satisfy our longings, it can feel like something’s wrong with us. It’s not. Our souls are simply no longer content with shiny distractions. We can (and should) still enjoy the beauty around us and the people in our lives. We’re just no longer looking for anyone or anything else to fill us other than God.

As C. S. Lewis says, "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.”

That other reality is coming…a new heaven and a new earth. In this in-between time, stay hungry for the home God is preparing for us. The writer of Hebrews says it well: Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.” (Hebrews 11:16 NIV)
