Reality Check
On a recent two-day cross-country trip, I drove past a sign in the middle of nowhere that said in hand-painted letters, “God Is Real.” I was so stunned that I had to turn my truck around and drive back to take a photo of it. It was a simple yet bold proclamation.
Yes, God is real. But not because we, as the created, say so.
He is the uncreated Creator of everything. He invented the category of real. Said differently, there isn’t a higher category labeled “Real” that God hopes to be accepted into. God is the category that everything else bows to, including reality. Every bit of creation is defined by and dependent on God for its meaning and sustenance.
All laws of nature are simply our awareness of God’s design for how creation works. We are bound by these laws but God is not. Every molecule remains at his command to do as he pleases. If we want a reality check, we must begin with God. No one and nothing is more real than him.
The way forward requires us to seek what is most real and make God the North Star by which we see everything. Otherwise, an endless array of bright, shiny objects will continually distract us and lead us astray. Yet when we orient ourselves to the most real, we become more who we were created to be.
