Picasso & Jesus

Pablo Picasso famously said, “The world doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?”

It’s a fair question. What’s the point of our art? Is it to act as a mirror, reflecting the chaos around us…or could there be a higher purpose? We don’t have to wonder. Jesus answers that question.

When the followers of Jesus asked why he told stories, he responded, “That’s why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward a welcome awakening.” (Matthew 13, MSG)

That’s the higher purpose—for our creativity to stir a readiness as it nudges others toward a welcome awakening.

And it gets better. Our creativity can actually illuminate what’s been hidden or lost since Eden. Think I’m exaggerating? Look at what the stories of Jesus did.

All Jesus did that day was tell stories—a long storytelling afternoon. His storytelling fulfilled the prophecy: I will open my mouth and tell stories; I will bring out into the open things hidden since the world’s first day. (Matthew 13:34-35  MSG)

What if you asked him to do the same with your art as you pursue it together with him?
