Passionate Isn’t Preachy

When speaking with folks about how to pursue their creativity with God, they’ll often note, “I don’t want to be preachy.”

On one level, I get it. No one expects your art to preach a sermon. We have preachers for that.

But on another level, the enemy can use that fear to water down your creativity. The enemy doesn’t care what we do, as long as we do it without God’s active, intimate presence.

If there’s no echo of the eternal in what you’re doing, why do it? If the only way to sell a story is to leave God out of it, does the world really need more of those stories? If during an interview, you hesitate to mention God for fear of what the host or audience might think, be careful. God isn’t a secret to be kept.

Boldly create with God. Then boldly share it with others. That’s not being preachy. It’s being passionate.

You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!...By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:15-16, The Message)
