Newer Isn’t Truer

Ancient wisdom that’s proven true for centuries somehow suddenly seems irrelevant for our lives today. This assumption is rooted in an odd mix of arrogance and ignorance.

We think because we live in the now that our new ideas are superior to all who have come before us. Theologian J. I. Packer describes this toxic mindset well: “The newer is the truer, only what is recent is decent, every shift of ground is a step forward, and every latest word must be hailed as the last word on the subject.”

Rather than be enamored with the shiny, the shallow, and the sense that we already have access to all the answers, let’s pursue the depths of God’s timeless wisdom and wonder.

Because newer isn’t truer.
