Music Without Words

We all have our favorite songs. Individually, they reveal a specific aspect of who we are…or long to be. Together, they make up the soundtrack of our lives.

Recently, I’ve found myself drawn to music without lyrics. This adds a spaciousness that gives my heart, soul, mind, and imagination time to breathe and roam without someone else's words guiding the moment.

I first discovered the power of instrumental albums in college. I found I could study better with music without words. The piano and guitar albums from Windham Hill (check out their collections as well as pieces by George Winston) got me through many late-night homework sessions. Today, movie scores are a great go-to. If I need a jolt of adrenaline during a writing project, I opt for the Mission Impossible Fallout album. If I want an atmosphere of wonder and awe, I choose the Narnia soundtrack from the movie trilogy (The Chronicles of Narnia).

But it is the music of Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi that has recently stirred my heart and imagination. When asked how he came to see songs as he does, Ludovico gave this remarkable response: “there is a sort of dignity inside music.” Yes, that’s it.

Rather than offer more words, I’ll let the music speak for itself. Experience his songs on your favorite music platform or his essential tracks (This is Ludovico Einaudi) on Spotify.
