Independence Based in Dependence

We love our independence. It’s not something we have to be taught. We’re born with an aversion to any and all constraints.

We think the more independent we are, the more free we are.

That’s not a good thing. Because from nations to individuals, we were never meant to be independent from God. The Creator created us for deep intimacy and union with him. When we resist or reject that, we end up like Adam and Eve…with a Tree of Knowledge instead of the Tree of Life. We become dead branches unattached to the life-giving vine. As Jesus says: I am the vine, and you are the branches. If any remain in me and I remain in them, they produce much fruit. But without me they can do nothing. (John 15:5 NCV)

Real freedom comes only through complete dependence on Jesus. Because only he can set us free from our addictions, fears, ego, and striving. He alone is the source of freedom.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. (Galatians 5:1 NIV)

So today I celebrate my independence from self-help, the enemy, and this world. And affirm my total dependence on Jesus.
