Imagine the Best, Not the Worst

Having a vivid imagination is necessary for original works of creativity. But when it comes to the unknown, our imagination can work against us.

When we can’t reach a child or elderly parent, we immediately imagine the worst case scenario. If our boss says she needs to meet with us first thing in the morning, we envision our entire career going up in flames. Before we know what will happen, we’ve already gone through the drama and trauma of what never happened…except for in our mind’s eye.

Don’t let the enemy fuel your fears by imagining how wrong something could go. Instead, invite God right into the middle of your fears. Allow him to conquer those toxic thoughts. Consecrate your imagination to God. Ask him to fill your mind with the best, not the worst.

You’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (Philippians 4:8-9 MSG)
