How to Be New This Year

At the beginning of every year, this phrase promises the impossible: New Year. New You.

After a few weeks, it is once again found to be empty and goes back into hiding.

A new page on the calendar never leads to a new you. Nor much of anything else new. Solomon, the wisest person of his day, said there’s nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). But he wasn’t done: There’s nothing new on this earth. Year after year it’s the same old thing. Does someone call out, “Hey, this is new”? Don’t get excited—it’s the same old story. (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 MSG)

While changing seasons can’t change you, God can.

He promises to make all things new…including you (Revelation 21:5). But only if you join God in the story he is in. My book, The Eden Option, refers to that as Story 1. And how it can be yours.

Here in this first week of January, take time to submit every aspect of the year—your dreams, fears, family, home, finances, and creativity—to God. It’s the only way to be truly new this year.
