Formula Isn’t Your Friend

Rather than giving us a formula for success, God instead gives us himself. Formulas don’t require God’s presence. Worse, they offer the illusion of control in place of intimacy and dependence on a wild, unpredictable, playful, non-formulaic Creator.

So while discipline, craft, productivity, and hard work are helpful tools, they can only take you so far. So yes, master your craft and grow in your specific industry. But also make sure your day is driven more by spending time with God in the things that make your heart come alive. This surpasses every technique known to humans. While people can teach the mechanical, you are invited to something far greater— co-creating with the Creator.

Creation is bringing something new into existence. Formula is re-creation of what’s already been done. Through a repetitive series of steps, it seeks to gain similar results by duplicating what’s worked in the past. That’s great for a muffin mix. Not for your art.
