Doubt Isn’t Helpful

Somehow, we’ve come to see doubt as noble. For many believers, admitting doubts about aspects of God or scripture isn’t something to be avoided but actually viewed as being real or “authentic.”

But God never holds up doubt about him as being good or noble. Doubt is actually the first step away from God. One that leads to less of God and less than we were meant to be.

Consider Adam and Eve. They doubted God’s goodness and then ate from the wrong tree. Or Peter. He was walking on water until he looked at the water rather than Jesus. His doubt led to a sinking feeling that became a sinking reality. There’s Doubting Thomas. Yes, Jesus satisfied his doubts. But the other disciples didn’t require the path of doubt to believe.

What about David? Many see his Psalms as examples of doubt. I see it differently. He certainly wrestled through his feelings about God, but notice he did so with God. He addressed God through his wailings and rants and questions. He didn’t wonder if God was real.

Like David, we experience disappointments. But they don’t have to lead to doubt. The fruit of doubt is always bitter. Because it leads us away from God. Which is right where the enemy wants you.

No matter the situation, stay firm in your belief that God is real and good and present. No matter how hard it is, that’s always the next best step. Because it’s a step toward—not away from—God.
