Creation, Not Comfort

Giving birth to a new idea—especially one that counters the chaos in this world—is beautiful, messy, and costly.

What we’re after is the truest creation, not the most comfort. We must relinquish all illusion of control to God….and allow him to lead.

The goal isn’t a life of ease but to one of intention, purpose, and destiny.

A friend of mine, Blaine Eldredge, puts it this way: “An artist’s best work comes not from comfort but from the limitations and hard times of life.” Remember Madeleine L’Engle’s quote from our last reading: “To create a work of art, great or small, is work, hard work, and work requires discipline and order.” (Order Over Chaos).

The path being described requires discipline and order. To walk it well, we must let go of control as we step into the unknown with God. Yes, there is tension in pursuing creativity in this way. It can feel inefficient and out of your control. That’s good. Because control isn’t the goal. Remember, control and order aren’t the same substance. God is both the most creative being ever...and a God of order. He will be your sage every step of the way.

So ask yourself what you were born to bring into this world. Then decide how much you’re willing to sacrifice in order to make it a reality. It will likely require discomfort and opposition.

It isn’t easy. But there’s no other option if you seek to create something with an eternal spark.
