An Inspiring, Terrifying Project

Imagine being given a creative project that would honor God, had an unlimited budget, that would inspire others in the moment, and that people would still be talking about centuries later.

It would be inspiring…and a bit terrifying. Just ask our friend Bezalel whom we read about in the last reading). God assigned him to be the chief architect and artisan of the tabernacle. His responsibilities included—but weren’t limited to—overseeing the creation of the Ark of the Covenant, the priestly garments, wood and stone carvings, metal work, and the holy oils. Beyond these skilled crafts, he was also to be a skilled teacher.

Moses told the Israelites, “See, God has selected Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. He’s filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and know-how for making all sorts of things, to design and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to carve stones and set them; to carve wood, working in every kind of skilled craft. And he’s also made him a teacher, he and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. He’s gifted them with the know-how needed for carving, designing, weaving, and embroidering in blue, purple, and scarlet fabrics, and in fine linen. They can make anything and design anything.” (Exodus 35:30–35 MSG)

God filled Bezalel and his students with his Spirit. Then they could “make anything and design anything.” Not in their strength. Not due to their amazingness. It was only possible with God’s filling.

God has also called you by name. He’s infused you with a specific set of skills and gifts. And now he’s filling you with skill and ability to affect the atmosphere around you. The pressure is off to come through or be amazing.

Simply pursue what you love with God and ask him to fill you with his Spirit. Yes, learn your craft. Put in the hours. Do the work. But start from a foundation of intimacy and humility. What God has given you to do is beyond you, for you, and never up to you.
