ABC’s of Creativity: Comfort

Throughout May, I’ll be sharing three ideas per reading on a specific aspect of our creativity. I call it the ABC’s of Creativity because I focus on topics that begin with an A, B, or C. If this leaves you hungry for more, my book Waves of Creativity provides an “A to Z” gathering of ideas on creating with God.

Three thoughts on Comfort…

1
Comfort softens your creative edge. Don’t seek a cozy chair and a cup of mocha when you’re creating. Seek a question that won’t let you go, an ache that you can’t quite name. Then wrestle it out on the canvas. Your art is an attempt to answer through colors, words, and images.

2
Your art can’t take people on a journey of discovery while you stay comfortably camped in the status quo. You must first step into the unknown, face your fears, and discover God in fresh ways. It requires humility to be the wide-eyed traveler rather than the master guide.

3
Great art is often born in the midst of great chaos. Though your finished art might comfort people, the creation process isn’t meant to comfort you. It is costly, requiring a sacrifice of time and emotion as you enter the unknown. Yet what you and God create together will infuse beauty, life and order into the chaos.
