/  / with God

On a recent flight, the woman next to me asked about the book I was reading. We spent the rest of the trip talking about God and creativity.

She used her hands as she spoke and I noticed two diagonal lines:  /  / on the side of her finger. I asked what the tattoo meant and she answered with a story.

It turns out she mentors a talented composer who lives across the country. The young woman’s desire is to create musical scores with God for movies and shows—only using her gift for good. So she set out to find a visual symbol that would be in front of her every time she composed. She chose a tattoo of two diagonal lines for a finger on her dominant hand. My new airplane friend decided to get the same tattoo—as a reminder to pray for this woman and her gifting each day.

My seatmate smiled. “But you didn’t ask me that. You asked what the lines mean. The two lines represent a musical notation called Caesura. When the symbol is placed in sheet music, it indicates a brief silent pause for the orchestra during which time is not counted. Playing only resumes when the conductor indicates. So everyone must keep their eyes on the conductor—to watch for his timing and interpretation of the music.”

That’s it. Eyes on God. To see his timing and interpretation of our creativity. To  / /  with God.
